Why Does The Sun Cause Pigmentation?

As much as we all love the sun, it is one of our skin’s biggest foes. When absorbed by the skin, the sun causes free radical damage which wreaks havoc within the skin: essential foundational proteins like collagen are destroyed, DNA is damaged and the skin begins to prematurely age. That’s why, believe it or not, pigmentation is one of your skin’s first lines of defense against sun damage. When your skin senses a type of external aggression it immediately begins to produce excess melanin or pigmentation that then travel into each skin cell and sit on top of the cellular DNA in an effort to create a physical barrier of protection. When we were young this process lent itself to cute sun freckles that faded with the start of fall. Unfortunately, as we age, skin loses the efficiency to regenerate and, as a result, the pigmentation becomes stubborn and permanent.

Effective Treatment For Pigmentation

When targeting stubborn, deeply rooted issues we believe that a multi-modality approach provides the most comprehensive results. Multi-modality means using differing technologies or treatment techniques that are complementary and when combined together achieve profound results. When tackling pigmentation, we combine BBL and microneedling to break up dark spots and support new, healthy cell regeneration to restore a younger, brighter skin surface.

What Is BBL?

BBL stands for broadband light laser and is a non-ablative phototherapy treatment that helps fades discoloration to restore a more even skin tone. Using pulse light technology, the device attracts pigmentation and draws it to the skin’s surface where it naturally sheds off. Unlike many other laser treatments, BBL has minimal downtime so you can go right back to your life. In the few days following your treatment, you will notice that your dark spots will darken, sometimes scab and then exfoliate off. This treatment can target both brown and red spots to help address your full spectrum of pigmentation concerns. An added plus? A recent clinical study showed that when a group of patients consistently received BBL treatments their skin slowed down the aging process! When patients were graded by an expert physician they were found to appear younger than their actual age.

What Is Microneedling?

Commonly known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling causes micro-punctures and small wounds to the skin’s surface that stimulate regeneration and a wound healing response. Here’s how it works: a physician uses a device with tiny adjustable needles at the tip that penetrates the top layer of the skin to a controlled depth of between 0.5 and 2.5 millimeters. This micro-wounds help to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, a process that helps resurface younger skin cells. It’s your skin, but with fresh, healthy skin cells imparting a brand new glow!
